Economic Development Officer (Micro-Mobility Industry) - Economic Development, City of Toronto - Toronto, ON

Company/Shop: Economic Development, City of Toronto

Position: Economic Development Officer (Micro-Mobility Industry)

Job Description: Are you passionate about growing the green industries in Canada? Do you like making a positive impact in a fast growing industry with huge potentials in new employment, wealth creation, and reducing GHG emissions globally?

The Sector Development Office (SDO) is part of Toronto's Economic Development & Culture division and supports the growth of key high-growth industry sectors in Toronto. The SDO uses the principles of cluster development to create, support and sustain robust networks of companies and partner organizations.

The sustainable transportation sector is one of Toronto's rapidly growing green sectors and its micro-mobility cluster (i.e. bikes, ebikes, light EVs) have a critical role in achieving local GHG emission reductions. This industry is facing significant workforce challenges which are slowing its growth.

The SDO has received funding from Ontario's Skill Development Fund to support a workforce development initiative to overcome these challenges and is looking to hire an Economic Development Officer (EDO) who will be responsible for delivering the project.

The role will focus on implementing the two key components of the project: Creating training and accreditation programs for skilled workers in the industry including looking at making bike mechanics a registered skilled trade; and developing and implementing a workforce attraction strategy to assist the industry in hiring new workers. These will be done in partnership and collaboration with the local bike cluster and stakeholders in academia and NGOs.

Staff in the SDO live in a fast pace environment of independence, collaboration and synergies between different sectors of Toronto's economy with regular opportunities to contribute ideas and to develop solutions that support economic growth and work with key stakeholders in other City offices, the provincial and federal governments and industry and trade organizations.

This is a full-time, temporary position of 12 month duration. It can open up the door to future employment inside the City of Toronto. It is one of 4 EDOs being hired under this job call (so not all responsibilities listed on the Job Site may be relevant).
